I am sad to report that Professor Philippe Malaurie, Emeritus Professor at University Pantheon-Assas (Paris II), died recently of covid-19, aged 95.
Others of my generation who attended Paris II as students will remember Philippe Malaurie.
He had Scottish ancestors and was a devout catholic.
He became one of the youngest professors of law and taught in France, Vietnam, and Beirut.
Most of his career, he taught private law at Paris II.
He published numerous books on family law, trusts, and estates, liens, some of which in collaboration with Professor Laurent Aynès.
In 2020, he received the distinction of Commandeur des Palmes Académiques.
He gave a number of lectures in French in London to the FBLS including L’Etat et la religion: une comparaison franco-britannique and le droit et la litérature.
He will be greatly missed as one of the most reputable professors of law in France and as a friend.
